    Impressive, July 26, 2010

Considering that I`ve only used the gun for casual target shooting (plinking), my review may lack some credibility. That said, for my purposes, I`ve been incredibly pleased with the rifle.

It offers a more rewording target shooting experience than any automatic/rapid fire CO2 gun I`ve used (which seem to hit the target more by chance than skill). With significant power (1200 feet per sec), it provides plenty of range and accuracy. Though there is noise and recoil with each shot, it`s nothing extreme.

It`s not a toy, and it doesn`t cost a small fortune, and for someone looking for a single shot, break barrel air rifle–it`s a great choice.

    Overall: 9/10

Decent back yard plinker from Remington/Crossman, May 24, 2010
    By
    DGG “DGG” (Florida) –

I shoot mine in the back yard every week or two. It is solid, reliable, and reasonably accurate. I shoot Benjamine .177 pellets, .177 wadcutters, and bb`s. All work very well. It has decent range and the speed is up there. It isn`t the quietest, doesn`t have the best trigger, has a nice hefty stock, scope on mine seems okay but have heard of problems with some of the other scopes. For $25 you can by a really nice 3x9x32mm .22 cal scope. Cocking takes a bit of effort but can be done quickly and easily. For targets and plinking it works very well. I haven`t tried to hunt with it (that`s what my 7mm Remington Mag or my 12 ga. is for). If I ever find a nice rat when I`m shooting he will be history!

It does everything I wanted it to do without breaking the bank.

Very powerful, but loud air rifle, September 17, 2011
    By
Eric M. (Research Triangle, NC USA) –
This review is from: Crosman Remington Vantage .177 Caliber Hardwood Stock Break Barrel Air Rifle with 4 X 32mm Scope (Sports)

I purchased this rifle today at a brick and mortar Dick`s Sporting Goods for $120 (everyday price, not including tax). I bought it to shoot targets in the backyard with my son. The included CenterPoint scope (available separately for $30) isn`t great, but it isn`t terrible. The rifle feels like a full size hunting rifle, heavier than any .22 I`ve ever held.

I was surprised by how much force was required to cock the rifle (I`m 6`3″ 250 lbs), but others say that it gets easier to cock with time. However, what surprised me more than the force needed to cock it was how loud the report was and how much the rifle recoiled. I was shooting Crosman lead pellets.

When putting on the scope, I wondered why the rifle was equipped to accommodate a stop pin on the scope. Now I know! I haven`t fired my .22 magnum rifle in a long time, but from my recollection, this rifle is just as loud (however, see update below).

I can`t really comment objectively on the accuracy, since I still need to sight in the scope (again see update below). However, my impression is that it is probably comparable to a .22 LR.

Overall, I`m really impressed with this rifle. Unfortunately, although I live outside the city limits and our neighborhood lots are 2-3 acres, I don`t feel comfortable shooting this rifle because I`m afraid the neighbors will call the police due to the rather loud report when fired.

If you have a good place to shoot and you`re looking for a relatively inexpensive, cheap-to-shoot, accurate, full-size rifle, then you`ll be very happy with the Remington Vantage .177. However, don`t think that just because it`s a “pellet gun” that it will have a quiet report. On the contrary, it`s probably at least as loud as most .22 LR rifles (initially, but see update below).

    *******UPDATE Sep 25, 2011*******
As mentioned above, the report of this rifle was very loud initially (using Crosman lead pellets). However, after about 10 shots, the report was noticeably quieter. Others have reported this as well. There seemed to be a correlation between the amount of oil in the breech, a noticeable amount of which was already present upon taking the rifle from box, and the volume of the report. Interestingly, in addition to being loud, the first few shots “smoked,” almost like a cartridge fired rifle, which was probably the oil burning off under high compression (not unlike a diesel engine).

The rifle sighted in very easily. However, be forewarned that the scope mounts need to be really tight. I thought mine were tight enough, but after 20 shots, the scope was wobbling due to the excessive recoil. I cranked down on everything, trying to be careful to tighten evenly and not damage the scope. After 200 shots, the scope is still accurate. At 20 yds, I was able to get a very tight grouping (1″ circle) without much effort. Tomorrow, I`m going to try 50 yds and see how it works.

    Fabulous rifle!, July 6, 2011
    By
    Old Codger (USA) –

This is the most perfect and carefree Air Rifle that I can imagine. It is powerful, easy to cock, load and fire. It makes much less noise and has less recoil of any other air rifle I have ever used and is accurate. It is well engineered, flawlessly made and the stock is super sturdy and easy to hold and use. I originally was going to get a custom stock for this, but now that I have handled it, I won`t bother; it`s just great. The trigger is also very acceptable; no rough spots and no excessive creep. Also, unnaturally, the scope and scope mounts that came with it are very acceptable. I was going to replace the scope but I really don`t think that will be necessary either. Another big plus is the Weaver scope rail built into the receiver – takes all the idiocy out of the old slipping scope mount problem with a spring powered rifle.

Many kudos to Crosman for engineering this. It takes air rifles to a new plateau of excellence!

If you need a carefree air rifle that is easy to use, easy to keep up and nice to look at, this is the one.

Prior air rifles owned and used: Mendoza, RWS34, Ruger Blackhawk, Walther Talon Magnum.

A great gun with consistent accuracy, August 3, 2011
    By
    Jack

I have shot approximately 200 rounds of blunt nose and pointed .177 so far.
Noise: The rifle is getting quieter but still has a fairly loud crack. Less than a balloon popping, more than a BB gun of similar FPS.
Weight: Not for a person without some upper body strength unless they are using a rest to prevent barrel travel.
Optics: Well matched for the rifle. Adjustable diopter for near or far sightedness.
Accuracy: With a rest and a bright, clear, still day consistent 1 inch groups out to 200 feet.
Knock down capability: Took out an adult gray squirrel with a center mass shot at 100 feet with a blunt nose. Penetrated to the spine.

Opinion: This is not your grandfathers air gun, and is not a toy. The craftsmanship is excellent, the operation is brain dead simple.
The factory setting of the trigger was a little stiff so I adjusted it to my liking according to the instructions.
I am looking forward to years of plinking and pest control.
If you are looking for a pellet rifle with some power and the backing and experience of a company that has been around “forever” then this is the rifle for you.

    powerful, well made, but…, November 15, 2011

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What`s this?)

Just got this air rifle from Amazon. Delivery was super fast. Amazon is just amazing. Walmart also sells the same gun at the same price. However, Amazon has free delivery to home plus no sales tax. So I chose Amazon.

One of the reason I got this air rifle is to practice my shooting skills. I have a little cabin in the woods where I can safely fire this air rifle in the backyard where it slopes uphill about 50 ft. And with neighbors at least 300 ft away, I am not too worry about the pellet ricochets and injury someone.

Back to the Crosman Nitro Venom – this gun is very well made, and definitely not a toy gun. At 1200 fps, it is probably at the lower end of the newer nitro piston air rifles (the newer NP air rifles can go close to 1700 fps). But compare to the older technology springloaded break barrel air rifles, the Nitro Venom definitely outpower most of them. At $149, this crosman nitro venom is the cheapest NP I can find online. Most of the other NPs are selling over $220. If you really need that kind of speed/power, you may as well get yourself a real firearm like a .22 mag.

In terms of power, this NP has plenty. We put 3 tin cans (not those thin aluminum soda cans) back to back. It went through two of cans straight and made a big dent on the third. The funny thing is that only the third can was knocked down. In comparsion, my old 600 fps air rifle can only penetrate one side of the same tin can. The Nitro Venom is definitely good for taking down small pests such as rats, groundhogs, or that woodpecker who wants to make my house his next nest. But for larger animals like raccoon or bobcat, I would rather use a .22lr.

The centerpoint 3x9x32 scope that came with the rifle was pretty easy to use and mount. The rifle has the 20mm weaver mount built in, so mounting the scope took about 2 minute. Sighting it however, took sometime. We set up a target at 40ft which should be pretty easy but to my surprise, the first few shoots grouped about 2 inches apart. After a few more shots, I was able to sight the scope to about 1/2 inch. That is pretty much the same accuracy as my other old air rifle. I was expecting the more powerful and much longer Nitro Venom to be more accurate. Hopefully after more shots, the accuracy improves.

The safety is well designed and easy to use. The only thing is that I wish the safety will set automatically whenever you cock the gun. I have to remind myself to set the safety on before I cock and load. The trigger is pretty smooth but rather long, but the final release is smooth and the recoil is minimum.

Another thing about this rifle is that it is heavy. It weighted about 7 pound and it is long which makes it difficult to hold steady if you don`t have the upper body strength. Moreover, the break barrel action takes some muscle. After about 30 shots, my arms were tired. My fifteen year old son tried and it took all his strength to cock the rifle. But like I said, this is an adult air rifle, not a toy.

Overall, it is a good air rifle.
    Toy? No.
First air rifle for the kids? No, too heavy and too powerful.
Safe to shoot in an urban/suburban setting? No, this gun will blow through those thin 3/8″ redwood fence.
Good for self defense? No, no air rifle is, unless you like to use the air rifle as a club. For self defense, I stay with my Mossberg 500.
Powerful? Yes for an air rifle.
    Well made? Yes.
    Price? Can`t complain at $149.00.
